Hungary's next attempt to recapture past gloriesAt the early FIFA World Cups™ Hungary were a true football force and came close to securing the title on two occasions. However both times saw the underdog take the glory and lift the coveted World Cup title; in 1938 it was Italy and in 1954 it was Germany in the so-called “The Miracle of Berne”. In recent years, the Hungarian national football team have struggled to repeat the success of those long-lost days. Former manager Peter Varhidi was sacked after Hungary failed to qualify for the UEFA EURO 2008 and the task now lies with former Feyernood manager Erwin Koeman. The squad consists of talented young players but with a qualification group consisting of teams such as Portugal, Sweden and Denmark they may well struggle to progress again. |
